Pink Reason and the Thomas Function-Thurs Oct.11 at the Roche!!!
Pink Reason is always Kevin DeBroux and practically never anyone else. The self-released Pink Reason debut seven-inch from 2006 was an itch of such beguiling psychic ache that all the inhabitants of Siltbreeze Island scratched it until they bled. On this first full length, the resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, continues to ooze muzzy melancholia by the bucket, ably and formidably clearing house in Sanguine Manor, whose previous tenants include Royal Trux, The Jacobites, Phantom Payne, Black Vial, and other marginal inhabitants whose sticky fingers glimmer in stoned adulation.
Dominated by creeping synths, stark strums and rickety percussive splats that complement De Broux's heartscraping vocal catharsis, Cleaning The Mirror journeys far beyond any known perspective, practically insinuating an alternate otherworld where Tim Buckley's Lorca and Jandek's Ready For The House have been hybridized into a ripe-for-plucking masterpiece. Or, shunning hyperbole in favor of acronym, Pink Reason's modern day DIY is very FYI that you should check out PDQ.
Look for Pink Reason live via land, sea and air throughout 2007.
One of my top 2007 finds (and perhaps yours as well - the word is most definitely out) is a young band from Huntsville, AL called THOMAS FUNCTION. Reminscient in so many ways of a stripped-down, keyboard-augmented, less grandeur-bound TELEVISION, two of their three 45s are among the finest & most deceptively catchy records of our aging decade so far. (I say 2 of the 3 because I haven't heard the new one yet - the label says it's "in the mail"). I think the main guy's vocals come off as so much more real than others looking to recreate a pre-punk history for a post-punk world, and THOMAS FUNCTION are the sort of band that's going to appeal equally aging record dorks like myself and the new gaggle of teenage hipsters. Apparently the garage punk congnescenti dig 'em too. See you what you think by downloading two of their best so far. (From Detailed Twang)

Some Goings On this weekend
One man roots rock-n-roll band Subourbon Son will be having his CD release party at the Roche Bar in Port Huron Saturday night. Also on the bill local fun-punks the McFlys and Ohio's Death By Rodeo. Showtime is around 10pm and there's no door charge.
Fans of sex kitten Brigitte Bardot are having the 10th annual Brigitte Bardot Vidfest from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Quay Street Brewing Co. in Port Huron. Each year, fans celebrate the birthday of the international movie star in the basement of the brew pub, 330 Quay St. A collection of rare movies and documentaries, some never seen in Port Huron, are shown on the wide-screen, high-definition television.Examples of film art that promoted her career, which lasted from 1952 until she retired from films in 1973, will be on display as well as rare lobby cards, posters, movie stills and autographs.
The films scheduled are Paparazzi(1963), Et Dieu crèa le femme(1956), Voulez-vous danser avec moi?(1959) and La bride sur le cou(1961). The event is free.

Where's The Beat (and WSGR in general?)
So people have been asking what has been going on with the radio program and questions about the radio station signal itself. The station is on the air but is suffering from some tech problems. It's is running at full power but when you tune it in it sounds all distorted. There is a bug somewhere in the system. The station is waiting on the technician to show up and fix the problems.
What it boils down to is that there is one licensed tech and he does not live in the area and the does the work for most of the radio stations in the area. He's only in Port Huron one day a week and takes care of all the stuff he has to do on that day. The college station gets overlooked sometimes. EVERYbody involved in the station is trying their best to get the station back up to speed but hands are sorta tied when it comes to this aspect of it. The show won't be on tonight and next week is the Harvest Moon Party BUT we hope to get it rolling the week after that (provided the tech probs are taken care of.)
Comments and concerns can be found here.
If ya wanna dig something along the lines of what might've went on check out our LastFM page and a in development thing we got going on at Bloop.

Port Huron's Best Store For Beer Selection
After lengthy research and the opinions from local beer enthusiasts us here at Blue Water Beat crown Ryan's Market the best place in the Port Huron area to get suds that are a bit out of the ordinary. Sure, they've got all the everyday brands as well, the corporate "boutique" brands (Blue Moon, Leinenkugel etc) as well as the largest of of the apparent microbreweries (Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada etc) but also give a lot of shelf space Michigan brands like Bell's, Founders, Atwater Block and MBC (no Jolly Pumpkin yet but they say they're working on it) as well as national up-n-comers such as North Coast and Victory. Oh, and how can we forget to mention a good selection of brews from everywhere else around the world. Each time one of us enters the store at 10th Ave. & Pine Grove it's not just an in and out trip. It's always "Hmmmm. What sounds good?" then taking more than a few minutes to decide sometimes.
